Are Modern Rife Frequencies Actually Rife's Frequencies?
Largely no. The numbers on a modern Rife machine descend from the 1953 Crane-Marsh AZ-58 — contact pads, square waves, audio-range values divided by ten — not from Rife's 1938 Beam Ray, a plasma-tube device carried on roughly 3.30 MHz. The filiation is inspirational, not technical.
Almost every consumer Rife machine ships with a database of numbers, and almost every number in it is presented, directly or by implication, as something Royal Raymond Rife discovered. A newcomer reasonably assumes a chain of custody: Rife identified a frequency in a San Diego laboratory in the 1930s, and that frequency is what the machine plays tonight. The chain does not hold. It breaks in a specific year, for specific engineering reasons, and the break is documented.
The reference volume behind this site devotes its first chapter to separating three historical layers that most Rife literature collapses into one: the documented Rife of 1929 to 1944, the Crane-Marsh re-engineering of 1950 to 1971, and the Lynes-and-Internet mythology of 1987 onward. The machine on a modern desk descends from the second layer. The story that arrives with it descends from the third.
This is not a debunking, and nothing here argues that a machine is fraudulent. It is a question of provenance, which is the one thing a newcomer can actually check. Knowing which stratum a claim belongs to changes what you do with the claim, and almost nothing else written on this subject makes the distinction at all.
Three Rifes, and only one of them is on your desk
Rife was a real man. He was born on May 16, 1888, in Elkhorn, Nebraska, and died on August 5, 1971, at Grossmont Hospital in El Cajon, California. He was a skilled optician whose formal education ended without a completed degree, and he was funded for roughly three decades by Amelia Timken Bridges, who built him a private laboratory at Point Loma in San Diego. He co-authored exactly one peer-reviewed paper in his lifetime, with Arthur Isaac Kendall, in California and Western Medicine in December 1931. In 1938 he finalized, with Philip Hoyland, the device that matters here: the Beam Ray, a gas-filled plasma tube emitting radio-frequency signals at a patient seated some distance away. Beam Ray Laboratories then collapsed in a San Diego Superior Court trial in late 1939, and Rife never recovered professional momentum.
The second layer arrives in the early 1950s, when John F. Crane, an engineer who came into Rife's orbit after the war, and John Marsh set out to commercialize the Beam Ray concept. What they produced in 1953, the AZ-58, is the device the modern Rife world actually inherited.
The third layer arrives in 1987 with Barry Lynes's The Cancer Cure That Worked, which introduced the persecuted-genius narrative now standard online: the suppressed cure, the coordinated medical enemy, the specific cure rate. The internet amplified it into preset names, forum posts and marketing brochures. It is the Rife most owners encounter and the one least grounded in the archives.
The rupture: 1938 Beam Ray, 1953 AZ-58
The 1938 Beam Ray delivered a sinusoidal signal through a plasma tube on a carrier of approximately 3.30 MHz, with treatment frequencies applied as audio-range modulations riding on that carrier. The device was large, power-hungry, and needed a trained operator. Rife emphasized that it was not a contact-electrode instrument.
The 1953 AZ-58 was a different machine. Contact pads replaced the plasma tube. A square wave replaced the sine. The radio-frequency carrier disappeared entirely. And the frequency values were divided by ten, to bring them within reach of the low-cost audio amplifiers of the day. Each of those decisions simplified manufacture and lowered cost; not one of them continued Rife's 1938 design. According to family accounts and late-period correspondence, Rife did not approve of the contact-pad direction.
The consequence can be stated bluntly. The frequencies run on a modern Spooky2, TrueRife F-122, BCX Ultra or GB4000 are, in the vast majority of cases, descendants of the 1953 AZ-58 specification rather than the 1938 Beam Ray specification. Anyone can check the direction of the evidence without archival access: open any modern entry in the Consolidated Annotated Frequency List and it sits in the audio range, typically between 100 and 10,000 Hz, not in the radio-frequency range of the original device. That audio placement is an artifact of the 1953 re-engineering. The filiation is inspirational, not technical.

Where the numbers on your screen actually come from
The Consolidated Annotated Frequency List, universally shortened to CAFL, is the de facto reference for the Rife community. Its modern form was compiled by Brian McInturff and colleagues at electroherbalism.com beginning in the late 1990s, drawing on earlier lists from John Crane and John Marsh circulated between the 1950s and 1970s, on Hulda Clark's zapping publications from the 1990s, and on user reports accumulated across decades. Its own introduction is admirably direct: the entries are community-sourced, are not clinically validated, and should not be the sole basis of any medical decision.
That compilation history is why the CAFL is best read as an amalgam rather than a lineage. Some entries descend from Crane's own records. Others were added by later figures whose work has no connection to Rife at all. A reader who believes they are running Rife's frequency for something is often running a value entered into a community database decades after Rife's death.
The database labels are the fastest way to judge a preset. CAFL is the main community list. PROV means provisional, which signals less community history behind an entry, not more. ETDF is a Spooky2-specific database whose biofeedback-derived origin story has not been independently validated and is not documented at the level a journal would require. XTRA is a catch-all whose entries may come from anywhere. HC marks frequencies from Hulda Clark's publications, whose claims have not been reproduced. As for the classic trio of 727, 787 and 880 Hz that appears in set after set, the reference volume's frequency index records these as core CAFL values inherited from the 1950s AZ-58 era, not from Rife's 1930s equipment.
Documented, unclear, and not true
Documented. Rife's biography and dates. The Timken patronage. The single 1931 peer-reviewed paper. The parameters of the 1938 Beam Ray and of the 1953 AZ-58, including the division by ten. The 1939 Beam Ray trial. Crane's later conviction in California, on ten counts, carrying a ten-year federal sentence of which he served three years and one month. And the CAFL's compilation history, which its own maintainers publish.
Unclear. What actually happened at the 1934 clinic. Milbank Johnson, a Los Angeles physician, conducted a series of clinical observations at a private facility associated with the USC Medical School, on a population that one contemporary source with archive access describes as a mix of cancer and tuberculosis patients. The clinic existed and the sessions were held. It was never written up as a peer-reviewed study, no patient records have been located, and in a 1935 letter Johnson himself called the results inconclusive. Rife's schooling is similarly unresolved: he told interviewers he had studied at Johns Hopkins, and no enrollment record has surfaced. The provenance of most individual CAFL entries is, on inspection, equally untraceable.
Not true, on the evidence of the institutions and examiners named. The Heidelberg doctorate: the university's archives office confirms that its 1913-1914 degree registers are intact and contain no degree issued to Rife. The Carl Zeiss employment in Jena: the corporate archive there reports no personnel record for him. The figure of 14 cures out of 16 terminal cancer patients in 1934: it traces to Lynes in 1987, not to any document of the period. The poisoning of Milbank Johnson: he died on October 3, 1944, of a heart attack at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, and the poisoning story appears only in later reconstructions. And the microscope itself: visible-light optics cannot resolve structures at virus scale, a limit Ernst Abbe established in 1873, and W. T. Welford's 1978 examination for Imperial College found the instrument's resolution extremely poor, with the photographed structures being aberration artifacts rather than organisms. Ronald Cowden's 1988 examination of another Rife instrument reached a similar verdict.
What the answer changes
Three things follow. First, when you meet a claim about what Rife discovered in 1934, treat it as a 1987 reconstruction until someone shows you a 1934 source. If the claim matters enough to act on, ask for the archive citation before you trust it; most such claims do not survive the question.
Second, running a CAFL frequency means participating in a 1953 Crane-Marsh user tradition with seventy-odd years of reported experience behind it, not replicating Rife's 1938 device. That reframing is not a downgrade. It lets the community tradition stand on its own terms rather than borrowing a historical foundation the archives do not support.
Third, none of this answers whether anything happens in a session. Provenance and effect are separate questions, and this page addresses only the first. The reference volume's position on the second is that community tradition is not clinical evidence, and that the line worth respecting is between complementing conventional medical care and substituting for it. Did Rife approve of the machine his name is now attached to?
No. He had built a plasma instrument deliberately and emphasized that it was not a contact-electrode device. Family accounts and late-period correspondence indicate he disagreed with the contact-pad direction Crane and Marsh took in 1953. By then, after the 1939 Beam Ray trial and the fading of his patronage, he was in no position to object effectively.
Is the figure of 14 cancer cures out of 16 patients in 1934 real?
